Pier 57 is a 1950s feat of engineering – a 633,00-square-foot building which floats on concrete caissons in the Hudson River now repositioned as a cultural and community landmark in the bustling neighborhood of Chelsea.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building’s industrial past and existing features are at the center of S9’s conversion of the site into a welcoming, contextual public place. Steel structure, metal panels, and curved geometry inform the design of two restaurants, a 7,000-square-foot market hall, and classroom and exhibition space for the Hudson River Park Trust. Warm materials such as wood, rattan, and brass have been introduced in select locations to juxtapose the colder materials and create a welcoming environment to escape the heat of the sun in the summer months or the cool winds which blow over the adjacent park in the winter season. Care was taken to ensure the design and furnishings would not detract from the expansive waterfront and skyline views scene from the restaurants, public areas, and office spaces above. S9 collaborated with Handel Architects, who served as the Architect for the building’s core and shell.
